Our Vanity with God

(Image from: https://lh5.googleusercontent.com)

“The human tendency toward projectionascribing to God our thoughts, feelings, and attitudes about ourselves and others—is unmasked in all its absurdity. Distorted images and caricatures of God as vengeful, whimsical, fickle, and punitive (images that cannot fail to engender anxiety, fear, scrupulosity, and unhealthy guilt) are exposed for what they are—puny and pathetic human constructs.”—Brennan Manning (from his Book “Ruthless Trust”)

Not only do we as humans do this with God, we do this with all in his universe. We are a people who buy Halloween and Christmas costumes for our pets, including booties. We are probably the only being that has to ascribe everything in this world, as having human tendencies. Can we be in awe of something just because it is unlike anything we know? Do we need to have answers to everything, an explanation for everything God?

I’m thankful that in lieu of our attempts to capture God in a bottle and dissect Him—proclaiming we know all there is to know of the Almighty—despite our vanity, God overlooks our puny attempts, and loves us anyway.

  1. Hi Ella! I really liked this post. I sometimes sit and think about all the little attitudes and behaviors I've gone in and out of in the past and realize that God never changes, He is still there ready to comfort you and direct you in your ways.
I see you are also from Texas, :)
Great blog you have here, enjoying it. I'm adding you to my blog roll.

  4. Hi Ella, this is my first time on your blog and I love it. I think this is quotable: "I’m thankful that in lieu of our attempts to capture God in a bottle and dissect Him—proclaiming we know all there is to know of the Almighty—despite our vanity, God overlooks our puny attempts, and loves us anyway."

I have often said that the most amazing thing about God, for me, is not his omnipotence but his grace, his love. The love that loved to death and hell, that loves us even when we crucify him is humanly incomprehensible. It ought to make us fall on our knees and worship.

And, Brennan Manning is one of my favorite authors. I am also honored that you would follow my blog.
